The Eating Disorder Psychologist

Our Practice

Why work with us?

Our mission is to provide a globally accessible and specialist eating disorder online service. We do this by creating a safe space for individuals and their loved ones feel empowered to make the changes necessary to promote recovery. We believe passionately in recovery being possible for anyone at any time.
We employ a virtual treatment platform which enables our partnerships to grow and work together effortlessly. Through the use of technology, we are able to implement solutions to help clients access specialist treatment and support at any locality.
We view each individual as part of a system, therefore, where appropriate, family members and significant others are welcome to participate.
Our training is aligned with evidence-based treatment for eating disorders, as recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Using these frameworks, we design bespoke clinical interventions tailored to meet the needs and concerns of each individual. Our therapeutic approach incorporates the following models of therapy: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT); Schema Therapy, Attachment-based Therapy, Maudsley Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults (MANTRA), Specialist Supportive Clinical Management (SSCM) for anorexia nervosa. Psychodynamic Therapy, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Integrative Psychotherapy.
While we view ourselves as experienced in working with individuals in this area, we are mindful that our clients are experts on themselves. We endeavour to continue understanding, learning and empowering individuals living with eating disorders to make peace with food, accept and love their body and ultimately build a liberating life, free from the weight of an eating disorder.

It takes a team. The journey is not supposed to be solitary.

Our holistic treatment approach engages meaningful partnerships with expert practitioners, experienced and trained in the complexities of eating disorders and associated conditions. These include psychologists, dietitians, Psychiatrists, GPs, recovery coaches and exercise instructors. Our multidisciplinary approach ensures that each individual receives treatment tailored to their specific needs.
We support continuous professional development within our team and encourage innovation, ideas and creativity from both clients and practitioners. We value and respect diversity and have an established culture that supports our team members, in order for them to provide exceptional service provision to our clients.
First steps:
1. Reach out to us by completing our contact form or book a 15 minute Free consultation directly
2. We arrange a telephone or video consultation to understand how best to support your needs
3. Your psychologist or team member will contact you at a convenient time for your assessment and agree a treatment plan

What happens in the first session?

The session will involve an initial structured assessment to help understand your experience of your eating patterns. This is to help tailor therapy specifically to your needs as opposed to a more generalised treatment approach. You would be encouraged to describe your symptoms and we would explore your history and development of eating disordered symptoms over time. This furthers helps gain an understanding of experiences which contributed to disordered eating. We would also enquire about any other difficulties you may be experiencing such anxiety or depression as well as general questions about your lifestyle. This helps us understand how your eating patterns and mood impact your daily life.
Different models of treatment work for different people, so we work to collaboratively develop a plan of action which is recovery-focussed.

What to expect from treatment?

The main aims of therapy are to help you change your eating patterns, your beliefs about food and weight, and your body image, whilst also learning how to tolerate and manage anxiety as well as associated moods.
This will likely involve many changes to your eating-related behaviours in order to help you learn how to overcome fears about food, mood, and your body. The therapy sessions will help facilitate some of the recovery work you would be doing outside of sessions

Many people will experience additional concerns contributing to the maintenance of an eating disorder, such as low self-esteem, perfectionism, or relationship difficulties. These concerns will be addressed and worked through during therapy.

Will online therapy work for me?

Recovery from an eating disorder is hard work. Working through daily challenges takes courage, strength, and persistence. While there is no guarantee of full recovery, engaging in specialised treatment helps set you up in the best possible way to experience and enjoy your life to the full. Research on the differences between online therapy and in-person sessions have found both to have similar clinical outcomes.

Benefits of Telehealth or online therapy

It increases access to specialised treatment by
• Eliminating geographical distance to treatment services
• Adapting and enhancing treatment through the use of videoconferencing technologies
• Accessing treatment in a timely manner
• Providing continued adherence to evidence-based practice
Research on a variety of different therapeutic formats with diverse populations indicate no significant difference in outcome between online therapy and traditional in-person psychotherapy (Backhaus, et.al.,2012, in Videoconferencing psychotherapy: A systematic review)
